May Garden Journal

Hello sweet friends. I hope you are having a wonderful week. Thanks to all who checked on us Tuesday.  Fortunately we had no damage. I don’t know when I have seen so much rain fall in a day’s time. Our neighbor has a rain gauge that indicated we had 4 1/2 inches over the period. Many in Alabama had storm damage and flooding, please keep them in your prayers. Spring in Alabama seems to bring on the violent weather, it is always frightening. We are so glad that our son’s new home has a safe room. That is where I will be when there are tornado warnings.

Let’s take a little “walk about” to see what is going on in the garden!

I took this photo on an angle looking toward the back left corner of the garden. We have tried many different annuals between the soft touch hollies, we went back to vinca this year. The newest garden ornament (frog) was purchased for EM and EK, but I wasn’t the purchaser. I am sure you can guess who was!

My Renaissance Man always prunes the panicled hydrangeas in late winter. As you can see, the vanilla strawberries are coming back strong! They grow larger than our limelights.

Most of the photos were taken yesterday morning after the torrential rain on Tuesday. The apricot drift roses look a little beaten down!

You might notice some weeds! With all the rain, they grow much faster than flowers.

Two new “fire chief” arborvitae were planted in pots and are waiting to be placed in their permanent home. This Southern Living plant grabbed my attention with its bright gold spring foliage that changes to gentle hues of orange in summer and deepens to red in the fall.

This is the second bloom on the “stairway to heaven” iris. The first bloom was shared on Sunday’s post. As I said on the post, it was a gift from a fellow blogger. She mailed it to me three or four years ago, and I had never given up hope that it would bloom! It is a beauty!

The center of the garden holds a bronze statue that is no longer a fountain. For new readers, the two story building is Butch’s workshop…

…this building is directly behind the workshop and it is storage. On the opposite side of the garden is the Sunshine Cottage. Our son says we have built a compound!

In 2019, we planted two Karl Rosenfield peonies in the raised bed by our driveway. This is the first year for blooms and only on one plant. This photo was taken early Monday morning before all the rain began.

On Tuesday morning before the rain became more intense, I ran out and cut a couple of blooms. They are a brilliant fuchsia-red color!

Also planted in 2019 was a Festiva Maxima peony. It has produced five blooms just like the Karl Rosenfield. Its blooms are large, pure white, and very fragrant. I used three of them in my Monday Morning Blooms post.

The Sarah Bernhardt was planted last year and has given us one gorgeous bloom! She was planted in a large barrel and seems to be happy living there!

You can see just beyond the flag that the Snowball Viburnums have lost their blooms. They definitely put on a show in the early spring!

Many have asked where I found the statue. It was sourced locally and came from an estate in Atlanta.

Several asked about the planter from Monday’s post and it came from the same local shop!

Our gardeners have not been feeling well and are way behind. The head gardener has pneumonia and his assistant has asthmatic bronchitis. As you can see, the zinnia and sunflower seeds have not been planted. We are hopeful that by the time the ground is dry, we will feel better. This is my first time to purchase Johnny’s Seeds and am hoping they will turn into beautiful zinnias, sunflowers, and cosmos!

Before the head gardener became sick, he removed the fence behind the Adagio maiden grasses to expand into the planned cottage garden. Let’s just say everything gardening is a little behind!

The clematis is in bloom in our small courtyard in front of the house. Thank you so much for your visit and gracious comments. Wishing you a most delightful day!
